Wind Turbines

Wind Turbines Fire Suppression Systems

Wind Turbines are prone to catching on fire because their design puts highly flammable materials such as hydraulic oil and plastic in close proximity to machinery and electrical wires, which can ignite a fire if they overheat or are faulty. The main causes of fires are lightning strikes, electrical malfunction, mechanical failure, and errors with maintenance. Once ignited, the chances of fighting the blaze are slim due to the height of the wind turbine and the remote locations they are often in.

Reliable, robust and fully Automatic Fire Suppression solutions are essential

In each turbine nacelle there are a host of systems that have to work in harsh and remote conditions without fail. From the electrical control cabinets to the yaw & pitch motors, fires are a real threat. Introducing an Automatic Fire Suppression system as fire protection is becoming more prevalent because of the increased rate of fire incidents and the rising value and sizes of turbines. Even with the incredible engineering and safety measures of a wind turbine in place, a fire can ignite and develop, leading to the possible complete destruction of the turbine.

Wind Turbines can measure 200m in height, making fire a challenge for the emergency services

Due to the height and location of wind turbines, classic firefighting methods come up against their limits and therefore fire extinguishing systems used by Atlas World such as carbon dioxide, inert gases or clean agents such as FM-200® and Novec™1230, are especially appropriate for dealing with fires in electrical systems because they extinguish the fire quickly. Traditional fire protection solutions require large space requirements, are too heavy or rely on detection methods that aren’t suited to this environment. Atlas World Fire Suppression have a proven cost-effective system to eliminate fires from the source. Small space, low weight and with detection tubing makes this the ideal solution for this application.

Testimonials

“Fire is a real threat within our industry; materials processed in the waste & recycling industry are unpredictable and can be very flammable. With the risk of inherent fire increasing, Avenue Recycling deployed the expertise of Atlas World to install their fire suppression systems onto our JCB, Bailer and Electrical cabinet. This will mitigate fire as early in the process as possible. Atlas World provided first class customer service and their expert advice was invaluable. I would strongly recommend any company with fire risks to contact Atlas World.”

Albert Magill – Contracts Manager at Avenue Recycling

Testimonials

“Atlas World installed a range of Fire Suppression systems to our Electrical Cabinets. As our electrical cabinets are used for life saving equipment, there was a heightened requirement to ensure this equipment was protected from fire. Atlas World has carried out our Fire & Security and Energy requirements for over 30 years and we would thoroughly recommend any business to use them.”

George McCracken – Director of Estates, Risk and Enviroment at the BHSCT
